i've got a ming boggling problem..maybe you guys can help 1996 grand am 2.4 4 cyl...problem started at a stoplight..i was sitting waiting for a few fire trucks to clear the intersection and went to move on green.. when i accelerated the engine started to misfire like i had a fouled plug or dead cyl. i took it to a shop and had it diagnosed.. they told me it needed new plugs, coils, boots, module, fuel filter and inj. cleaning. replaced what was recommended and used injector cleaner no change in misfire.called shop and told them it still had misfire and they told me it was missing a "ground strap" from the coil cover. i didnt see one and everyshop i called incl. the dealer said there isnt one.. told the shop i took it to and they said they would check it and put one where the resistance was the highest. anyway..i then replaced all the injectors and the fuel pressure regulator and still had the misfire.i then replaced the cam and crank sensors along with the coil housing. that cured the misfire but when i went to test drive it it died and restarted but after a few times of it dying it wouldnt restart until the next day after it cooled down over night..i did however break a wire terminal off the wires to the starter when i replaced the crank sensor but i replaced the connector and it started ok and still starts..ive been starting and letting it run for up to 4 hrs.. it will idle and not stall until i go to drive it or "goose" the gas pedal...it seems to do this when it reaches approx. operating temp. i replaced the coolant sensor and fuel pump and battery and still have the same issue with it dying..im thinking that the o2 sensor or tps..or maybe the ecm is bad..any ideas??? im running out of ideas and patience ...

ok?

i see i posted either a real brain teaser or nobody has any answers..anything can help ..suggestions or questions...

I found on mine that the MAP sensor vacuum hose to the throtle body was broken sucking air which caused it to run bad.

well replaced the tps and still will die..ive found that i can drive it for a shrt time then it dies..it dies no matter how i drive it..if i get on it it will die and today i drove it for like 30 mins and was easy on it the whole time and it just died and wouldnt start until a few hrs later..it acts like its not getting any spark..but as i said earlier i replaced all the ign stuff. coils, boots, plugs, module
and housing.

did you check your back preasure on your exhaust. did you get something wet under your hood that could have shorted out a wire. other that that your difinely on the right track.also did you check cylinder preasure on all four?

clogged converter, possibly
I would check your fuel pressure. Sounds like you have a Pump problem to me.

yeah, i've been having the same problem with mine as well. Same hesitation and bogging down on acceleration. Right now i just shove in the clutch and it comes back but im going to wear that thing down quick. Let me know if you find out anything and ill do the same.

if a sensor was the problem you should have warning lights or check engine lights on you are just throwing money away if you don't know exactly the problem it could be a fuel line bad or a bad coil pack hard to tell unless you get a scan done to eliminate all the sensors once that is done go for the fuel filters and the line itself for leaks, also check all the hoses for air/vacuum leaks.

well i fixed the problem. turns out the new module was bad..put the old one back in and problem fixed..just be sure you have good housing or you will arc a hole right through it. as i did this past week..had to buy a new one again and install it. and intsalled the old coils as well. because the new ones started to misfire. i have been told there is /was a ground strap for the coils but i have not seen anything like it or have i seen any place under the housing for one..ive talked to dealerships and was told there isnt one.. what is the real deal here????i dont want to go through replaced the module and housing and coils again and again...

well it seems that this car likes to backfire throught the throttle body now. i had a new pipe installed ..the old one was leaking at the manifold. i did get a trouble code for the upstream o2 sensor..could that be causing it to backfire??
