Hello, I have a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am SE 4 cyl. 2.4.

Well it doesn't run and was taking out the starter to go get it tested at AutoZone. Well when we got back (as it was good), we forgot where the wiring went. Never accured to us as to write where each one went.

Can anyone help me out get it back together?

Thanks,
Brandon

P.S.
All I can find online is that there is a purple wire that goes to the smaller post on the passenger side smaller post but the only purple wire I see
is the one I never even touched to get off of the starter in the first place.

that's most likely why it won't start. it goes to the solenoid on the starter from ignition. * no power to the starter solenoid = nothing *

First of all, thanks for the answers!

I believe www.autozone.com has access to free wiring diagrams if you signup on their site
I just looked and tried using Google to look for the wiring diagram but there is not one on the AutoZone website for the vehicle. :(

Well the vehicle ran before it died, so whatever that wire that was hooked up to it did something.

The wire that came off on the post where the purple wire SHOULD have went was a red wire with what looks like it was added by a gray wire and taped. So I am guessing that is actually the purple wire gone wild somewhere by some other "repair" shop.

I believe we figured out the wiring though and should get it on tomorrow, will get back and let everyone know. :)

Thanks.

Alright, well got the starter hooked back up and wiring [should] be in the correct order as it was before taking it off.

Sounds like the starter is making a whining noise when you try to start it.

- We turn the key to start and hear a *CLICK*
- We then after hearing the *CLICK*, hear the whine sound.
- Turn key back to off and here the *CLICK*.

No matter how long you hold the key to start, the wine stays (no we did not leave it that way for a long period of time just about 10 seconds).

We realized that the alternator pulley was seized and went to get a alternator, so that is brand new, the battery is fairly new (1 1/2 years old).

Sound familiar to anyone of what it could be now?

We ordered (at AutoZone) and to pick up a new starter tomorrow to just TRY to see if that may be the case.

But does anyone else know anything else that it [may] be?

Checked the wiring, but all looks to be good.
