97 sunfire manual 2.2 clutch problems

Ok so I press the clutch to shift and sometimes it comes back into position and sometimes it doesn't I quick fixed it with Paracord to the pedal so I can pull it back up but need to fix asap. Also there is a strange spring attached to the shift cable bushing going down to something.

Have you checked the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder? This link shows the pedal and master and shows nothing other than the hydraulics that would cause the pedal to return to it's normal position. http://www.tonkinonlineparts.com/sh...1531&ukey_trimLevel=26105&searchString=clutch pedal

This diagram shows the shifter cable and there is no spring so you will have to figure out why someone placed a spring there
