This is going to be one of those "Shady Mechanics" stories.

My wife's car had been leaking a bit of coolant/anti freeze for awhile. Not a lot and it seemed whatever was leaking was being burned off of the engine since there was never a spot underneath where it actually hit the driveway.

I would have to top it off about every couple of months, depending on how much she drove it.

Well, about a month ago I decided to sell one of my cars ('01 Alero with the same engine). The guy that inquired about it said he didn't have all the money for it, but he owned a garage and wondered if I needed any kind of work done for a possible trade. I decided to mention my wife's car and we came to an agreement that seemed to work for both of us.

Flash forward one month. After getting the car back and driving approximately 50 miles, water starts pouring out of the bottom and a clanging/banging noise going on.

Turns out all this hack did was run stop leak through the system and now the Water Pump is seized and spewing coolant everywhere!

Now to my question.

I'm assuming the clanging/banging noise was the timing chain. I haven't torn the housing apart yet to verify, but if it is indeed the chain or the sprockets inside what other kind of damage could this have caused? Broken/bent valves etc...??

The car was at idle in the driveway when this occurred.

A timing chain breaking can cause major engine damage. Disassembly is the only way to determine the extent.

Disassemble of the housing only? or remove valve covers and everything else as well?

start with the housing to confirm youre suspicion.

Thank you for the response. It will most likely be after Thanksgiving before I start tearing it apart.
