Requiem
I have a '99 Pontiac Grand Am (164,000 miles). I have been having problems with coolant leaks since November. After a month of working with a crooked mechanic I took it to someone who fixed it. The problem was my intake manifold gasket had been eaten away by my Dex Cool antifreeze (common GM problem).
The gasket was replaced and the car was no longer leaking, but the temperature gauge was spiking up to 205-210 degrees. It would stay there for about 10 seconds, then go back down to normal temp. (Standard operating temp of my car is 190-195 degrees.) About this time my Service Vehicle Soon light came on. Problem turned out to be the crooked mechanic had replaced my BCM but not programmed it, so I had to take it to a dealership and pay them to reprogram my computer. The car worked fine for a few days but now my temp gauge is spiking like I mentioned before. My car is not leaking coolant but I occasionally have puddles next to my front passenger side tire where my radiator is (water?). Puddles do not occur when driving around town, only when driving at high speeds for my trips to and from work (65-70 mph for 23 miles on the turnpike).
Here's what's been done to my car:
-New upper and lower radiator hoses
-New thermostat, put in by crooked mechanic even though I didn't need it
-New BCM, problem detailed above
-New intake gasket as mentioned above
Are these temp spikes bad for my car? What could be wrong and how much would it cost to fix it?
With all the money I've poured into this car, I could literally buy myself a whole new engine, so I'd really appreciate some help! The car has never had any major problems until now, had it for 10 years.
