Hi! I have a "99 Grand Am 4 cyl. My ABS and Brake lights have been on for months with no reason. My brakes are in excellent shape, there is no noise and they work well. Recently I have noticed that my car "slipps" or "chugs" on occasion, once to the point where I had to tow my car home. I noticed a puddle underneath the rear axle area of my car and a very hot smell from underneath after driving a very short way.

What could be causing all of this? I have also been told my fan doesn't come on automatically, which I don't think has anything to do with the other things. I am clueless!

Your abs and brake lights are probably due to a bad wheel sensor or the harness connected to the sensor.
Could you determine what the puddle was, water, oil, gas?
Is you check engine light on? How many miles since you changed the fuel filter?

The puddle was dark, maybe oil but unsure. No Check Engine light is on, only the ABS/Brake combo. I am not sure how many miles since I changed my fuel filter. Which could very well mean that I NEED to change it now.

Could the ABS and Brake lights mean that I need a new back end? This puddle, could it have been transmission fluid? I have no mechanical knowledge about these things, only that I have had this car for about 9 years and have had one problem after another, but nothing like this. A girls dream, for sure!

In addition to the sensors/harness the lights could be related to the fluid if the fluid was brake fluid. Have you checked the fluid level in the brake master cylinder, you could have a leaking rear wheel cylinder?
