99 Sunfire Compressor Question

I think the AC compressor is going out on my 99 Sunfire. If it does will the car still drive okay? I know some of them are configured so that the car can't be driven if the compressor goes out. Thanks!

If the compressor and clutch seize you will have a problem but it's doubtful they would both seize at the same time. You probably just need to add refrigerant to the system.

Thanks! It is running cold but just making odd noises. Would that still be a refrigerant issue?

It only makes the noises with the A/C on?

Yes...I had a Grand Am that made the same noises when the compressor was going out. Sort of like hissing and spitting sounds. When I turn the air off, it stops.

In that case it could be the compressor and you can leave it till it fails or replace it now. You can take a rubber hose, hold one end to your ear, and the other end try to move it around till you isolate the source of the noise.
