Correct me if I am wrong. There is a small spring that kicks the key out of the starter motor
position and then back to the run position when I let go of the key? If so then there is a minor problem with the ignition switch. When I start my 2008 Pontiac Torrent, the starter motor stays on and engaged with the engine while the engine is running. When I manully move the key from the start position to the run position the starter motor disengages and shuts down. I can hear that action in the drivers seat taking place. I have changed out the ignition switch in a 1967 Chey 1/2 ton pickup. But that was before the age of computers and other the other types of gadgets that they put on cars now.

That told me how to get the ingition switch out. But it doesn't tell me if I am right and there is a problem with the ignition switch. I don't want to have to crawl on my bad back under the dash panel if ignition switch is good.

PS: The SUV still runs and drives ok. I just have to make sure that the starter motor is off after the engine has fired up.

go to an auto parts store and ask to look at the switch, if it turns back on it's own you found the problem. Seems to me no matter what, you are going to have to disassemble that area of the car.
