I have a 2005 Pontiac Montana non SV6. Periodically the ABS light goes on. To turn it off all i have to do is turn of ignition, then it will stay off for some time then go back on. I also noticed that at times the pedal will kick back when braking slightly, and no i'm not talking about when skidding, just when breaking. Anyone else had same issue?

Get the ABS system scanned for codes. You probably have a bad wheel speed sensor/hub

When you say the "pedal will kick back" does the abs pump come on briefly ?

Yeah its similar to when ABS engages when you start skidding. But in my case it kicks back when you just braking, and i feel it it'd kick back a little. I guess its the ABS pump engaging or something.

Like planenut wrote it apears as if you have a faulty wheel sensor , I guess only a scan will tell you . Must be comming in and out and triggering the abs pump. Good luck keep us posted .

the thing is as soon as you turn off the car it will reset the Abs system and light will go off until some random time it would appear. I just can't seem to trigger it purposely to diagnose it.

When it does happen drive to a place like "autozone" or similar or even a dealership and don't turn off the van maybe then they can read the code or even the history that's stored. As you probably know some places (autozone, advance auto, pep-boys ect..) will scan for free hoping that you would buy parts from them.

They can scan engine trouble codes, but i doubt they could diagnose ABS

A dealership or a good independent shop can scan it and get the codes stored in it. If the mechanic is worth his salt he can test drive with scanner on and pick out which wheel is messing up using the live data.
If the ABS light was on, then a code is stored! After you turn the car off and restart the ABS light will be off until the code returns, but is still stored from the previous ignition cycle.
From my experiance the list of things that that happen most in order are: 1- RH wheel hub because thats the one that always bumps the curbs. 2- broken wires at the wheel hubs, either side fronts. 3- corroded terminals on any of the wheels. 4- broken ABS chasis wiring front wheels.
