Hello. Here is my problem.
My battery is dead and I need to get my car in neutral so I can get it pushed from the spot it is at right now. When I put the key in the ignition it will not turn at all.
I know that a jump or a new battery will solve this but here is the problem. My car is in my garage and we can not get the jumper cables any where close to my battery from my friends car. I do not get paid till the 28'th and I cant buy a new battery until then (besides I think a jump is all I need).
If I can just get it into neutral I can push it out of my tiny garage and then I can get the cables hooked up and try to jump it.
Is there anyway to get this car into neutral?
1997 Pontiac Grand Am.
Thanks.

Hi Shelley,
There is a steering wheel lock connected with the ignition key. When the steering wheel is in the locked position, you can move it slightly back and forth. If you are having trouble turning your key in the ignition, jiggle the steering wheel while trying to turn the key.

You should remove the battery and have it charged. O'Reilly Auto Parts will charge and test your battery for free. If you just jump start the car and charge the battery with your alternator, you can damage or wear the alternator out prematurely. Alternators are not as sturdy as they were in the old days.
