If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "1995 Trans Am" isn't going to indicate to anybody that you need help. However, "Need help with my 1995 Trans Am" will. Be as descriptive as you can. Please use common sense... I have a 400 cid(6.6L 4bbl NA Turbo400) in my 1973 Grand Prix J with a block VIN code 25A127360, engine block casting number 481988, date code A215, engine block code YT, motor unit number 0234326. There is a 75 and 2 D<)N next to distributor pad. Most of this information seem to indicate this engine was original to a 1975 model but the block casting code refer to a 1974 model. Can someone decode and determine correct year and which model this engine was original to? Are there other codes or numbers on engine that will further identify the original year and model?

the lower information source is from

YT F-body 74 400 225 Turbo 400 L-78 T 1x4 481988 2

F body means this engine came out of a Firebird or Trans am

Date code A215 = A= January 21= 21st day 5 = 1975

Date Code:
The date code is cast on the distributor pad. It is a 3 or 4 digit code. The first digit will be a letter. A=January, B=February, C=March, etc. Followed by a 1 or 2 digit number for the day of the month. The last digit will be the year.

25A127360 2 = Pontiac 5 = 1975 A = Atlanta (127360) = last 6 of the vehicles VIN

The last 6 of the vehicles vin is just the production sequence = 127360

Vechile Identification Number (VIN):
The block VIN and the vehicle VIN were the same, but by late 1967 the block VIN was revised. It started out with a 2 (for Pontiac), the last digit of the year and a letter for the assembly plant followed by the last 6 digits of the vehicle VIN. It was located on the front of the block, on the passengers side, at the bottom near the timing cover.
Common assembly letters are: A = Alanta, B = Baltimore, C (or S) = Califorina/Southgate, E = Linden, NJ, G = Framingham, MA, K = Kansas City, MO, L = Van Nuys, R = Arlington, TX, x = Kansas City, KN, 1 = Oshawa, Ont. Z = Fremont, CA.
*Note* This number sometimes is stamped very lightly and may be hard to read as seen in this picture. It is also interesting that this block has the VIN stamped twice on it.

I will add more to this as I find it.however I suggest posting the other numbers you may have from the cylinder heads intake if it is a OE and exhaust manifolds if they are OE.

I think the confusion with the year may be that this engine is most likely a replacement engine supplied GM however I am unsure of this and need more time to do some research.

It is safe to say that the engine did not come with your car.
