bottom end bearings

Anyone changed out the bottom end (connecting rod) bearings on a (1999) 2.2L engine while the engine is still in the car? Can it be done? Huge hassle? My daughters' car has a knock in it that isn't loud at idle, but gets worse on acceleration.

If the rod bearing is spun making it have a knocking noise. The rod would have to be replaced which means the head has to be taken off. Also the crank would have to turned so the crank would have to come out. The easy way taking an engine apart is on a engine stand.
 
Thanks 81 Grand Prix....I'm assuming its a rod bearing......could the knock be caused by something else?
