Well prior to this year, and after owning only 1 other Catalina in the past with at least 30 other Pontiacs in that time frame, I have now bought the 2nd Catalina this year!
I found a 37,000 mile highly optioned 1978 Catalina Safari, bought the car Sight unseen, so I am rolling the dice a bit but it looks great. This car will replace the 1978 Impala Wagon I use as a summer driver Parts and Dog Hauler. So far I see that the car has Pwr Steering, Brakes, Seats, Windows, & Locks, Full Gauge Package with a fuel economy meter (vacuum Gauge), Tilt, Delay Wipers, rear window defroster, Cruise, Roof Rack, remote Drivers Mirror, Sport Mirrors, Delux Interior (but Standard Black Seat belts) some type of external appearance package. Towing Package with Class III Hitch and electric Brake controller.
The Only slightly disappointing feature to me is that it does not have a Pontiac 400 4bbl in it, 78 was the last year you could get one in a Catalina or Bonneville. But it does have the 350 option for 78 a Buick 350, not the Horse power impaired 301 Pontiac that was standard in the wagons in 78.
The odd things are that it has what seems to be a dealer installed A/C system, as it has an aftermarket A/C Compressor, but uses the Factory A/C controls, and in dash vents, odd. Also only an AM Radio, and has an external antenna not the in windshield type, also odd. And it is only a 2 seat wagon.
I did get it for what I think is a reasonable price, $5000.00 Going to pick it up this weekend, 10 hours one way.
The Odd thing is it is the same exterior and interior colors as my 78 Sunbird Wagon! Chesterfield Brown, with a Camel Interior. It might make for a good looking rig pulling into the track!!!! That and they are both Buick Powered 78 Pontiac Wagons, so I guess they are sisters.
What do you all think?
