Well prior to this year, and after owning only 1 other Catalina in the past with at least 30 other Pontiacs in that time frame, I have now bought the 2nd Catalina this year!
I found a 37,000 mile highly optioned 1978 Catalina Safari, bought the car Sight unseen, so I am rolling the dice a bit but it looks great. This car will replace the 1978 Impala Wagon I use as a summer driver Parts and Dog Hauler. So far I see that the car has Pwr Steering, Brakes, Seats, Windows, & Locks, Full Gauge Package with a fuel economy meter (vacuum Gauge), Tilt, Delay Wipers, rear window defroster, Cruise, Roof Rack, remote Drivers Mirror, Sport Mirrors, Delux Interior (but Standard Black Seat belts) some type of external appearance package. Towing Package with Class III Hitch and electric Brake controller.
The Only slightly disappointing feature to me is that it does not have a Pontiac 400 4bbl in it, 78 was the last year you could get one in a Catalina or Bonneville. But it does have the 350 option for 78 a Buick 350, not the Horse power impaired 301 Pontiac that was standard in the wagons in 78.
The odd things are that it has what seems to be a dealer installed A/C system, as it has an aftermarket A/C Compressor, but uses the Factory A/C controls, and in dash vents, odd. Also only an AM Radio, and has an external antenna not the in windshield type, also odd. And it is only a 2 seat wagon.
I did get it for what I think is a reasonable price, $5000.00 Going to pick it up this weekend, 10 hours one way.
The Odd thing is it is the same exterior and interior colors as my 78 Sunbird Wagon! Chesterfield Brown, with a Camel Interior. It might make for a good looking rig pulling into the track!!!! That and they are both Buick Powered 78 Pontiac Wagons, so I guess they are sisters.
What do you all think?

Looks like a good deal with that low mileage. Wonder if the factory compressor went south and a previous owner put the aftermarket one in. The antenna may have been an option.

Thanks,

I am hoping it is at least as good in person as in the pictures, I did get a lot of soso quality pic's from the seller, the underside looks great also.

My Hippy Dippy Wife has come up with the Plate she wants for the car, seeing as our big wagons are the only classics she will drive (she uses them to haul our Greyhounds around) She wants the plate to be

CAT4DGS or CAT4DOG

I will post some petter pic's after I get it home.

Well I got the car home with 1 medium sized misshap. But very happy with the condition of the car! With the exeption of not having a towing Package (but having almost every part of the HD towing Package ordered Seperatly) And the newly installed head liner being about 10 shades to light to match the rest of the interior. I could not be happier with the car. The Pontiac Historical services package was waiting for me when I arrived at home. Here is a list of the 25 Factory options on the car.

(1) Body Side Molding
(2) 5.7 Litre (350) 4BBL V-8 Engine
(3) Tires, HR75X15 WSW STL
(4) Battery, Heavy Duty
(5) Cruise Control
(6) Defroster, Electric Rear Window
(7) Gages, Instrument Panel & Fuel Econ IND
(8) Glass: All Window Soft Ray
(9) Insulation, Additional Acoustical
(10) Lamp Group
(11) Luggage Carrier
(12) Mirrors, LH R/Cont Sport. RH Man Adj
(13) Moldings Window Sill
(14) Power Door Locks + Tailgate Release
(15) Power 60/40 Seat, Driver & Passenger
(16) Power Windows
(17) Steering Wheel, Luxury Cushion
(18) Steering Wheel Tilt
(19) Step Pad, Rear Bumper
(20) Wheel Covers, Deluxe
(21) Windshield Wipers, Controlled Cycle
(22) Alternator, Heavy Duty 80 Amps
(23) Firm Ride Option
(24) Radiator, Super Cooling
(25) Custom Trim Group (VINYL)

In addition the car has A-R-A brand aftermarket A/C, and an aftermarket AM Radio with fender mounted antenna. It also has a very nice Class III Hitch with load leveling bars, and the same 7-pin trailer wiring plug that my car trailer takes. It also has a Electric Brake Controller that seems to still work.

really loaded car, nice find, good luck with it
