So on my way in today I notice some smoke coming up from the hood. Not a lot, but enough that I can see it. I pulled over and got a whiff of it and it is burning coolant. Seems to be coming from the filler neck of the radiator but I couldn't see for sure where it was coming from. Wondering if anyone has come across this before? I'm going to take a gander at the hoses tonight but could there be a larger problem here? Water pump maybe? I did do some work on the cooling system not too long ago and thought I got all the air out

Thanks as always

If you can't see where its leaking then you have to get it pressure tested or rent a pressure tester. There is a weep hole on the bottom of the waterpump just under the shaft to releave antifreeze when the bearing/seal start to go bad.

So after looking at this diagram I'm thinking the transmission cooling line is what has been affected since it seemed to be coming up from part 5

So......yeah......

1. If steam could escape out of there, in theory could coolant get into the transmission line?
2. What else would I be looking at replacing other than the radiator? Fluid and filter change on the tranny? Water pump?

Thanks all. Have a good Thanksgiving

there has been cases that the internal tranny cooler has leaked but rare , if it does leak and goes un-noticed you can cook the tranny. couple of options, replace the rad, or cut your tranny lines at the rad and redirect them towards a new external tranny cooler mounted in front of the rad.

what do you see that's leaking ?

It looks like it's coming from the cap or the neck of the radiator, did you try replacing the cap? This has nothing to do with the transmission cooler.

maybe once the van is nice and warmed upped , shut it off and squeeze the rad hose to create a little more pressure and take a look and see where it is leaking from ? I know it's easier said then done but maybe wipe the area (s) clean which may help to see where the steam/antifreeze is coming from.

So maybe a bigger problem here

I have tried twice now to remove the cap after the engine has sat for 8 hours. Both times, coolant starts leaking out. Is it possible the system is not de-pressurizing? Is there something I can pull up on my OBD2 reader that would give any insight?

Which cap, if the one on the radiator that is normal. Doesnt the line from the small tube on the radiator neck go to a bottle where you can monitor the fluid level?

It does. My thought is that if the recovery tank is too full then the coolant is wanting to drain down

If I unmount the tank and hold it below the neck of the radiator, the extra coolant should drain down into the recovery tank and then I can try swapping the cap

If you are trying to replace the radiator cap on a cold engine, just replace it, you will only loose a very small amount of coolant.
