Ok, I'm buying a car from a friend. I already know it's got back pressure issues, but I'm wondering how to narrow down why. Or what are some of the more common reasons for the low pressure issues? Is this a common problem with Fiero's?

not sure what you are talking about, first you say back pressure issues which could mean a clogged catalytic convertor and then you say low pressure issues which means something completely different.

get a more detailed explanation of the problem, that term doesnt make sense with regard to having a problem.

Low back pressure is a good thing. It means the exhaust has very little restriction. Add a set of performance headers and they reduce back-pressure resulting in better performance. High back pressure is bad. Means something is restricting the exhaust. Common things are a cloggled catalytic converter or a defective/bad muffler.

If he means low cylinder pressure it could have low compression due to bad valves or bad piston rings or a bad head gasket.

You need to find out exactly what he means. Or tell use what the engine is doing or not doing and we can tell you what to look at.

See ... that's what I thought. Everything I had read about 'low back pressure' and every one I had talked to about it said that it wasn't a bad thing at all. I'm really thinking some one told him it had a compression issue. He said he's pretty sure it's leaking oil around a cylinder. I'm really not worried about it, as I'm willing to do an engine rebuild if it ends up needing it.

Between me and my girlfriend, we have several mechanic friends that have offered to help with testing and work (when/if I need it) and I've got the garage space to park it in for the next few months (if need be) to tear it down and fix everything before it goes on the road anyways.
