Can the transmission from a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am fit in a 1996?

Had rather substantial damage happen to the transmission in my 96, and the only transmission we've been able to find is a 99. I was told by the person I bought it from that a 99's would fit, but the mechanic is telling me no

when i googled it said 96-98,however some sheet metal parts seem to work thru '04...think the mechanic is right,you can join grand am support group for much more info.on google
