the wheels have the clear coat coming off and they don't look that good what can i do with them?

I refinished a set of stock aluminum wheels before. If you remove the wheels and spray them down (tape off the tires) with Permatex Spray-On Gasket remover this will strip all the clear coat off. Then you can wet sand them down. If you have bad areas like scratches or minor pitting you start with 220 grit on those areas only. Then use 420 grit on the entire surface. (You don't need to sand areas that are very rough like the inside of the slots) Pay close attention to the lip. You will notice machining lines which can be sanded away. Next use 600 grit then finally 1200 grit. Once done use Mothers Aluminum polish. The wheel will look mirror polished. If you have color accents on the inside slot areas, You can tape off the face and use Duplicolor auto touch-up spray in the color of your choice. Then you can either leave them uncoated and just wax them (This will require you to keep them clean and waxed them often due to weather and road grime) or you can spray them with Duplicolors clear urethane wheel paint. This will dull the polished look slightly so they won't look like a mirror and it will be protected from the weather/road grime, but they will still be more shiny/polished than stock.

If you have the lip style wheel weights you can either sand around them or remove the weights and have the wheels re-balanced after you refinish them.

You will need 1 can of the gasket remover per wheel and it will take you about 2 hours per wheel to sand them.
