Can your transmission fail if you change the trans fluid on an old car that hasn't been changed in 5...

...years? I have a 1998 Plymouth Breeze with about 140,000 miles on it. The trans fluid hasn't been changed since about 55,000 miles and the clutches are going bad. I have been told that changing the fluid at this point can do more harm than good. Is this true?

YES IT CAN .the best thing is to mix some of the old fluid with the new fluid .

Not necessarily. When the pan is dropped, be sure to change the transmission filter along with the fluid change. If the pan shows heavy deposits of clutch plate material, than an overhaul or re-manufactured unit is forth coming.

No. I did it in a 40 year old tranny

Don't believe anybody here. Too many conflicting answers, contact a pro.

No, you will destroy your tranny if you DON'T change the fluid.

Changing the Fluid will only help. The reason why is that the lubricity of the tranny fluid you are using now has worn away...meaning the oils that help the transmission drive smoothly. When you add new transmission fluid you are putting in a fresh fluid which will lubricate things much easier and quicker than the one you currently have in. If the clutches are going bad as you suggest then you need to do a clutch job. Hope this helps.

NO.

You say the clutches are going bad.
That is because the fluid was not changed.

You might take it to a shop for a fluid change and tell them what you told us. Sometimes there are adjustments that can be made inside to get more miles from the trans.

But you will still have to face the possibility of trans repairs either way.
Ask around for a shop that has treated other folks right before you go.....
