Hi, maybe some coolant holes for the engine coolant in the engine block is jammed, so the coolant can go freely thru all the engine

mine was the heater core. which in turn messed up my waterpump somehow.. but the heater core busted they told me and thats why it over heated. i got a new one and its been fine since.

overheating problems
On some models of GM if the radiator cap is not sealed properly then it will over heat also on some maodels there is a bleed screw for the water systems so I think I would start there,especially if you have cracked the coolant system in any way(ie. thermastate). Happy trails

I fought a similar problem with my gals car - did the whole route: new radiator, hoses, thermostat,power flush, etc...even bypassed the cooling fan switch so that it was always on whenever the engine was on (that one worked).
What finally got the car back to working wight was replacing the cooling fan sensor, located near the water connection on the top of the engine ($ 12.00/Auto Zone). The car runs as normal - touches 220 then stays around 180.

I once had a similar problem. It turned out that there were bubbles in the radiator / coolant line keeping it from cooling as well as it should have. Had to bleed out the bubbles. Seems this happened after I changed the radiator fluid. I've been told that this is a known problem.

I Just Left My "cooked" '96 Grand Am On The Side Of The Road. Two Independent Mechanics Told Me That Particular Engine, 2.4 L/4 Cyl Is Well Known To Have Serious Problems. I Changed The Rad, Hoses, Water Pump, Thermostat,used The Orange Coolant And Flushed The Rad. Bought In '04 At 58,000 Kms Engine Finished At 160,000 In '06. Never Again, Pontiac, Never Again.
