I replaced my starter and neutral safety switch in my 1984 Pontiac Fiero that I just bought. It’s an automatic and I can’t seem to figure out what the problem is. I’m assuming I unknowing bumped something the wrong way. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Will I have to drop my transmission? Thanks!

Was it a new neutral safety switch with any kind of pin that was used to properly install and adjust the switch?
Did you install the switch with the transmission in neutral?

It was new however there was no pins or anything, just the part itself. Although people told me I was able to do it in park I ended up putting my car in neutral before I disconnected my battery and all.

Did it appear the switch could be adjusted, slotted screw holes on switch?

Put trans in neutral, insert a small drill bit or the likes into the hole on the right side of the terminal.
It only lines up 1 way.

Defective part brands are Standard Motors & Napa neutral safety switches. ( pn NS37 & ECH NS6557)

The switch you want is an AC Delco, part number D 2202A.
This switch lines up the same way, costs a bit more but is a direct bolt on.
The others were manufactured wrong & will give you problems forever.

Easy fix. Only a cable adjustment. No need to remove trans. However you will have to remove the councel in order to fix the problem. It is possable that the cable on the trans might be contributing to the problem though.
