So, here's the story. Went out yesterday and got an oil change. Car started fine when I left the shop and ran fine from the shop to home. Parked the car in my garage. Few hours later I have to go pick up hubby from work so I go out to start car but it won't start. When I turn the key to start it all I get it a VERY loud screeching/whining sound that continues as long as I have the key in the start position. It almost sounds like a very high pitched chainsaw. As soon as I let go of the key, the sound stops but the car still doesn't start. The oil light did not come on at any time on my way home from the shop, but just in case, I DID check to make sure they put oil back in the car and they did, so it's not that. Headlights and all accessories still work so it's not the battery (which is only a couple months old anyways). I had the starter replaced 2 years ago, and although I'm not sure how long starters typically last, I would imagine it would be longer than 2 years.
I need some help here. Finances are tight and I don't want to have to tow it to the mechanic if I don't have to, especially without having some sort of idea what's wrong with it. I am a female with NO knowledge of cars. And hubby has even less knowledge than I do (he doesn't even drive). But I'm a fast learner and can be walked through things if it's explained good enough.
Anyways, just curious if anyone has any idea as to what it could be? In case it's relevant.. it's a 2002 Sunfire Sedan, automatic.
