1987 sunbird GT non turbo. Replaced starter, but still car wont start. I checked for V at the starter and got 12.6V. Then at the starter ignition post (the tiny bolt) while an assistant turned the key to start and got zero V, so this must indicate a bad switch, right? But once I pull the steering wheel, what exactly would one replace, the lock cylinder?

Thanks.

Ignition switch is bolted on top of the steering column, you have to drop the column to get to it...lock cylinder only moves a rod to it.

Pull the curved dash piece out from under the column, then you will see the 13 mm bolts that hold the column up.....2 bolts the hold the switch to the top of the column , 2 plugs of wires on the right of switch...one wire usually burns out on the switch..

Have fun, another pain in the azz part to get in and out..if that's it.

Could be the neutral safety switch on the shifter if automatic...also.

Thanks, Doug. Thats good info. Turned out it was a bad purple wire going to the ignition post on the starter! Had to rewire to it from the clutch safety switch. Ignition switch was good. Whew.
