So, I got the universal cat from Advanced Auto and put it on a couple months back. The car has been sitting since then, and I only started it up very quickly once after I replaced it. I know that everything isn't clamped down perfectly. I had some issues and I apparently didn't cut the piping to the right size for after the exhaust went back up, so it's lose. But, today, I started it up and the cat caught on fire! There were flames coming out of the end of the pipe over the original exhaust and the end was red hot. Any ideas? One of my roommates said a possible oil leak into the cat? But, the oil is still at the same level it was when I parked The Beast ... and when I took the old cat off, there wasn't any oil or anything inside or anything leaking out. Is it possible I got a defective cat??

when you started it after installing it, did you have the check engine light on? Othe than the flame did you have lots of black smoke coming out the exhaust? The Cat wont turn red unless it has a very rich mixture.

No check engine light at all. No black smoke. I had an egg smell, which is what keyed me in to the fact that something was up. It hasn't been started in months and it has rained a lot and it's under 40 degrees here, so I didn't think anything about the steam out the tail pipe. It's not the first time it's steamed or smoked, but after running up to temp it has always stopped.
