so i had my cat replaced last year it kept popping the p0420 code, replacing the cat fixed it. now a year later the same code just popped up. it hasnt gotten overly hot, the car does use some oil, but i never see any smoke out of the tail pipe, and it doesnt seem to be bleeding fuel pressure, but i havent checked that yet. but again no smoke on startup or while revving or driving. I bought a magnaflow direct fit cat from schucks (when they where actually schucks). from asking around the magnaflow cats fail almost all the time. do i just need to pony up the cash for an oe style?

If your sure the engine is not burning oil , then yes , replace the cat . I do wonder as you say it uses oil , if its not leaking it then it must be burning it. Maybe not enough for you to notice , but its going somewhere and if its burning it it is death to a Converter . I have also seen O2 sensors cause this code and not trigger a O2 code . So if your O2 sensors have very high milage on them then it would be wise to replace them as well
