As the title states, I need to replace the fuel pressure regulator.

I looked at the regulator and it looks like it comes right off. I did see it mentioned somewhere the fuel rail needs to come off, but I don't really see why that would be necessary. So if someone could confirm that doesn't need to be done, that would be great.

The main thing I'm stuck on is how to release the fuel pressure. I've see or heard of a few different ways to do it, but it was usually for other GM vehicles. So, what is the correct way?

You dont see a shrader valve on the fuel rail to release the pressure? If you believe you can remove the regulator without removing the rail it should be fine, the regulator usually screws onto the end of the fuel rail.

@melsg5: I don't see a release valve anywhere. There is a small area that I can't see behind the air intake. But it is a small area, so it isn't likely to be there, but I'll check before I get started. I think the valves are for larger and/or higher power engines, not base model 4 cylinder engines.

@richardgriese: Where is the fuse for the pump? When you say 'run' the engine, does that mean to try to start it, or put it in a run position, or something else?

When you turn the key to the run position the fuel pump is energized. So when you remove the fuse, the pump is disabled. Turn the key to the start position and it will use what fuel is in the rail to try to start the engine. That will depressurize the rail.

In standard fuse locations. IDK about the 1996 year but you will normally find that fuse box under the hood in a fuse location typically by the wheel. FYI there are usually fuses inside the cabin hidden in the dashboard.

Pull the cover and read the cover it will tell you what fuse goes to which part of the vehicle.

I found the fuse box (it's right by the battery), pulled the fuse, and was ready to go, until I went to unscrew the regulator bolt and realized it requires a torx bit!

So my next (and hopefully final question!) is does anyone know what size torx is required?

I don't know specifically for your model. But you should invest in a set rather than buying or borrowing 1 if you can even do that. IDK 10-15 bucks and you will run across other applications. You could even get one of the tamper proof torx.

However, on my LA1 3400 the v6 which is similar to the v6 that's in the upgraded model, it's a T30

I was thinking it required the T30, but just by looking at it there was/is a slight possibility it's the T40.

Actually getting a set was the plan! I have some upcoming projects that require some of the slightly smaller size torx, so I'm trying to find out the sizes so I can get the appropriate set. It looks like I'm going to get an Eklind set, since they go up to T40 and are made in the USA.

Amen Kevlar! I have to shut my eyes when I walk into any place that has tools or I see a tool truck.

There should be a valve (tire like) covered with a alu. cap- on the high pressure like =in full access for testing-it is small & easy to overlook. if u dont find it =just disconnect the neg batt term- remove the fuel line / or crack it loose & replace the part u need to. cover that line with a rag too so fuel wont squirt on u under pressure!
