I have a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am with the 2.2L engine. On Monday night when I was at work I was ready to go home, but when I tried to turn on my car my ignition cylinder was locked up. I couldn't even turn it. It did this to be before, but it fixed itself it seemed. I had someone drive me home when that happened, but came back about 3 hours later with my brother in law (since he's a mechanic). First time he put the keys in it fired up. I thought that was weird, but it worked fine after that for about 6 months without a hitch.

This time when it happened on Monday night I thought it would be the same, but it wasn't. This time it was locked up and wouldn't turn, even after leaving it over night. Today my brother in law helped me changed it out, but in order to do that we had to get a drill bit and drill a hole in the old ignition cylinder. Doing that we were able to get a pair of pliers, turn ignition manually to the run position, then take it out after we pressed that button at the bottom. We switched it out with the new one and the car is working fine now.

The only problem was that instead of waiting 10 minutes right away after installing the new ignition cylinder my brother in law tried to turn it on and off about 3x before finally leaving it sit about 10 minutes in the run position so it could relearn. while driving the car you can lock and unlock the doors just fine. The only problem is when you open the doors, whether the car is on or off, and try to lock the doors they won't. It'll unlock, but that does me no good cause now I have to go around the car locking the doors manually (b/c my remote is no good).

Does anyone have any idea why my doors won't lock (whether car is on or off) while the door is open? Is it because I'm now using 2 different keys; original to lock/unlock from outside and new keys to turn car on?

I would appreciate any help because it is annoying to walk around the car to manually lock the doors. :(
