Changing alternator on 91 sunbird

Is it possible to change the alternator on a 1991 Sunbird LE 3.1 Litre without having to remove the drive belt. I haven't attempted it yet but that's what my service manual recommends. It is very difficult to reach the bottom two pulleys, so if the alternator can be slid off without removing the belt I am ready to give it a try.
