Check engine light came on last week. Car starts and runs great but unable to establish communication when OBDII device is plugged into connector under driver's side dash to access any stored codes.
Anyone experience similar problem or know what might be the reason for this problem? Thanks for any help!

Check for a blown fuse.

Thanks, that's what Advance Auto Parts suggested when they hook their OBD and couldn't establish a connection. Do you know where the location of the fuse might be?Under the hood or inside the vehicle?
Thank you !!!

I just checked after your last post and found that the fuse for the lighter/ acc. plug in is blown. Another poster also mentioned the cig. lighter fuse.
Thanks, I'll replace the fuse (15a) and see if that solves the connection problem with the OBDII reader.

Well, the 15a fuse was blown and I replaced it. I went back to Advance Auto Parts and they brought out their OBDII reader but were still unable to establish a connection.
Any further thoughts?

did you check if the fuse blew again?

Yes,right away....it was o.k.

Thanks Melsg5 for your assistance. The link you indicated for the owner's manuals does not include the 1998 Grand Am and when I pulled up the 1999 Grand AM fuse diagram it is somewhat different than the 1998 model.
Do you or anybody else have a link or actual diagram for the 1998 fuses?
The only fuse boxes I've found on the car are on the driver's side and under the hood right by the battery.

I don't have my own OBDII reader so if I want to try and see if I've fixed the problem, I have to go to an auto parts store and have them plug in their reader to see if the problem has been resolved.
Can anyone tell me if the connection terminal located under the driver's side dash should have a "hot" terminal so that I can check to see if there is power at the connection point? If so which terminal is it?

I was just out checking fuses again and found a 15a fuse (horn) blown.
Replaced that one. All others appear ok.
Now I will need to find time to take it back and have the reader plugged in.
Any chance that fuse is responsible for the OBD problem?

Does anyone have a link to download the 1998 Grand Am owner's manual?
The link provide above only goes back to 1999 and fuse box layout appears somewhat different on the 99 vs the 98 model.
