check engine / OBDII can't establish communication

'98 Grand Am 3.3L ...Check engine light came on last week. The car starts and runs great. Tried to connect OBDII device to get codes but could not establish connection. Has anyone had this situation or know what the problem might be?
Tried two different OBDII devices and neither was able to retrieve any codes due to no communication between device and computer.

Thanks, just what Advance Auto Parts suggested when they hooked up their OBD device and got no response.
Any idea fuse location or which fuse(s) might be involved?
