its 1984 fiero, 4 banger with a 4spd. 47K miles.

my mom bought it and it started having problems where it'd grind when shifting gears.. so she took it to a shop.. they charged her $700 , and said they replaced the clutch ,resurfaced the flywheel, charged her for a clutch spring kit, shift for ... blah blah blah... they never did nothing like that :D
from what i see, no bolts have been removed to do a job like that, cuz they woulda broke cuz they so rusty! also the axel seals are in need of being replaced,so why didnt they just do that when the transmission was already out of the car? once again, they didnt do what they said.

all they did was replace the clutch master and bleed it !

after that it drove fine, and then started messing up ... the engine has to rev up a lot to get it rolling ,and the shift light tells u to shift up in to next gear when its barely rolling, wont go over 30 mph, motor is screaming just to stay at 20 mph... i think the clutch is slipping cuz its worn out.

the clutch pedal is fine, its not worn out and free of play, the clutch pedal sits up 1in higher than the brake pedal.
you can shift the transmission in to other gears with out grinding..

we got papers and reciepts from the shop charging her for the "clutch job"..

is there anything else to look at before i go buy a clutch kit and do it myself ?

why arent you going back to the shop to get this issue straigthened out?

the shop that did it is in illinois, after it was done my mom drove it to florida.
just trying to figure out what it is before we go buy more parts...

reguardless, they never replaced the clutch or anything they said they did.

sounds like the clutch is shot. No disrespect to your Mom but how good a manual shift driver is she?

You should take it to 2 or 3 different shops and have them look at it to see if they did or did not replace the clutch ect. now if the shops say "no they did not replace it" then take all 2 or 3 pieces of paperwork plus the work order from the shop in illinois..call the shop and let them know if they don't reimburse you by paying another shop near you to fix it..by going to the BBB and report there illigel actions. now if it had been done, it could be that the alignment of the shifter to the tranny could be mis aligned and you would have to go to a dealership to have it aligned right..besides that, I have no more ifo to give since i suck at all types of transmission's lol...But I'm sure Mr. Melsg5 could help you out alot better then I..

thanks for the advice, thats what i planned, take to a few shops and have them check it out.you can tell nothing has been messed with , all they did was replace the clutch master , not the clutch.

i think the shifter cable is fine, it shifts in to other gears no problem, the problem is that it doesnt really pull like it should.

sounds like the OP wants to do the job himself and those 2 or 3 shops will charge for the service. The BBB has no legal power and if the shop is not a member of the BBB they wont really care. the original shop is not going to pay another shop to do the work. small claims court is an option but proving the fraud to the court maybe difficult. for expertise on the job the best person on this forum is Oreif.

Yeah! but it won't cost much.plus some auto shop do free inspection to a point.all you have to do is removed the flywheel cover under the car and look inside to see if it's been replaced.Any auto tech can tell just by looking at it.and your right about the BBB, I live in california and pretty much everyone has to be with the BBB or osha and a million other groups Blah!..and if in the end they did not replace it small claims you go.. i think jugde mathis is around there..

is there any way to adjust the slave cylinder ? i was wondering if the push rod on the slave could be too long causing the clutch to be half way disengauged all the time even when ur foot isnt on the clutch pedal...

i found out that my brother inlaw ordered the wrong slave cylinder , so i he too the "parts " off the new slave and put them in the old slave cylinder..
i dont know exactly what parts he "swapped" nor did i understand what he was talking about..

just wondering if that could be the issue ?

thanks

If you have the 1/2 aluminum-1/2 steel clutch pedal, that may be your problem. They're notorius for bending out of whack. I had a similar issue that was resolved by bleeding the slave and removing and straightening the pedal itself.

Missed the part about your clutch pedal in the OP. I know the slave has to be bled a certain way asi I had trouble with it. I raised the rear end and it bled out perfectly.

my brother inlaw ordered a new slave... but it the was wrong one, so he took the push rod from it and stuck it in the old slave..

this is the slave cylinder he bought ,it does not fit a 84 fiero ,4cyl 4 spd..
so the push rod from this ,went in to the original slave

http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sku/PBR/Clutch_Slave_Cylinder/W0133-1635174.html

so wat im gonna do is buy a whole new slave from autozone and put it on .. i think the push rod is too long and has the clutch partially disengaged...

car still drives, just slips a lot , doesnt like to climb slight hills even.. :(

its bled properly,, it will change gears with out grinding!

my brother in law bought a new slave a few weeks ago, but it was the wrong slave cyl, it didnt fit.. so he took the push rod from it and put it in the old slave..

^^ slave cyl he ordered,, it says it does not fit a 84 fiero with 4cyl 4 spd..

i think the push rod is too long ,partially disengaging the clutch which is making it slip.

im gonna buy a new slave from auto zone and put it on and see what it does after that.

any time you place a link in a post it has to be moderated. Sometimes this may take many hours or in this case 3 minutes but you end up with a double posting since you naturally assume the first one had a problem and you post it a second time.

sorry for the double post :o

my brother didnt use the push rod from the new slave, he took the spring and o ring from the new slave and put it in the old slavve..
the slaves were both different, but he said the spring was the same size..

idk.. this is why i hate fixing someone else's hill billy riggin'.

imma just buy a new slave for a 84 and put it on. wish me luck.
