I plan to combine the body from a '76 Firebird and a frame/drivetrain from a '74. Does anyone know which VIN would be used by DMV, and what the process is for registering such a beast? One of my goals is to avoid smog by using the '74. Any help would be appreciated. I'm in California, and smog restrictions are tough.
Thanks,
Tim

did you look at the California DMV site or call them?

Yeah, the person I got on the phone said that it would be a "custom build" and DMV would assign a new VIN. I was dubious and after trolling the internet at length it seems that they would just use the body VIN not the frame.

depends on the state, but it should be the body vin...people try to swap bodies and use the old vin but thats is illegal.
