Hi All, I've got a 98 sunfire that I use for racing on a dirt track. It's just a beater. At the last race of the season the computer fell off and ripped all the wires off and the computer wasn't recovered. I have been given another computer off of another sunfire but I'm not sure of the year or model. There are far fewer wires on the one I was given. Does anyone know whether I can just hook up the wires on the doner computer, obviously matching the colors, if it will give me enough to make the thing run properly. I don't need lights or abs or any fancy stuff.

How can anybody answer that guestion without nothing exactly which wires are missing compared to the old computer and then knowing the function of those wires. The best you can is look for a part number on the new ecm and go to www.gmpartsdirect.com and see if they list what the original application was.

The '98 computer did have a different connection from the one used in a '96, just in case you happen to be given an older computer. I'm getting ready to scrap a '98, if you're not in a hurry, I'll check the wiring sometime next week. Not that it really matters, but is it a stick, or automatic?

It is an automatic. I got a complete harness and computer off of a 2000 but there are quite a few differences. Looks like I'll have to get one exactly the same. Thanks

Well...the one I'm scrapping is a '98 automatic. Everything was working when the engine was pulled.
I'll look at it and see how much work is involved in removing the harness. If your interested, maybe we can work out a deal where you pay the shipping. If the harness isn't to big, maybe I can stuff it into one of those flat rate shipping boxes from the post office. About $15.00 or so. I doubt that the computer will fit in the same box as the harness, so it'll have to go by itself.

I'd rather see someone get some use out of it then throw it away, but I also totally understand if you think the car isn't worth it.
