crazy instrument gages

hello forum, newbie here as far as pontiacs..i have an 1996 pontiac grand am se and when my daughter drives it, she says the gages go haywire somtimes. for example, the gas gage goes up and down and the speedometer does the same thing. today she said the brake light came on the went off after awhile..anyone out there experience this?:)
