Dash installation

When I purchased my 72 it came with the dash removed. I purchased a wire harness from Lectric Ltd , and recently
Put the dash back in. Problems: the fuel gage goes to max and stays there once car is starte, idiot light don't come on
When's key is turned, and the temp light lightly glows once running, and dash does not light up when headlight switch turned
For courtesy lights. Any clue what I have wrong or how to fix it!?? I did run a separate ground wire from battery to metal on. Dash, but that didn't help. Need help!!!
 
1. Fuel gauge, assuming you dont have a full tank of gasoline check the ground wire coming off the tank sender to the frame. If the wire is not properly grounded the gauge will read full.
2. Idiot light, are you referring to oil pressure?
3. You did check the dash bulbs, none are burnt out?
4. Is the plastic circuit board on the back of the instrument cluster damaged?
5. Are you working with a copy of the factory service manual in order to check circuits?
 
I will check for the ground wire on the sending unit.
Idiot light: yes o pressure and alt.......temp gage glows lightly all the time, even when cold.
The bulbs are all new, so is he printed circuit board.
I have a copy of factory service manual. I don't know how to check the circuits with the dash installed.

I went through the index in the service manual and could not find anything on trouble shooting the gauges while still installed. Am I missing something??

My point concerning the manual was the circuit diagrams give you a starting point to check things.
 
Understand😀 I took a pix prior to installing, and looks like the cluster wiring
(Where it plugs in ) would be the most obvious thing. Still don't understand why courtesy
Lights don't work. I'm still plugging away, hope I can find problem.
 
When you say courtesy lights, are you referring to under dash lights which come on along with the dome light when the doors are opened?
 
I'm referring to the lights for the gauges so you can see them at night. The overhead dome light does work.
I'm going to call lectric ltd tomorrow and ask if they can lead me in the right direction....can't hurt! The under dash light do not come on either.....only the dome light.

Found out there are 3 ground straps that should have been installed for wiper, gauges and clock.
Ordered parts from AMES. Hope to install them soon and I'll keep you posted on success......or not!
Does anyone have a pix of where or how the ground straps are installed???
 
In the long run, if you intend to keep the car, buy a copy of the AIM, assembly instruction manual.
