Replaced front brake pads on 2001 gran am and need to know where the thin piece of metal goes. It's about 1/32nd thick kinda the shape of a disc brake pad. When I took them apart meaning the old pads, upon removal I thought this was on the brake piston side. Meaning it was between the brake piston and the inside brake pad. This metal piece to me appeared to have a slight mark or impression on it indicating it was on the aforementioned side. This was on passenger side of the car. Now on drivers side I did not see this rounded impression on this this piece of metal upon disassembly. I couldn't decide which side of the pads it should go to, either inside or outside, or should it be REMOVED? I installed new pads on both sides and I reinstalled this thin shim or whatever it is called on the outside, meaning between the outside disc pad and brake pad structural holding apparatus. They have been reassembled and driving like this now for about 1-2 wks. Is this ok? On all other cars or trucks I've ever replaced pads on I have not had this piece in the assembly. Should I take it out, or take it (both sides) back apart and put this thin piece to the inside? If anyone has knowledge of how this goes or pictures I would appreciate your input.

It's the anti squeal shim. It goes in first between the caliper and the inboard pad. You should pull them apart again and install them correctly.

Thanks Kevlar I will do it. Between the inboard pad and piston is the way I understand you.
