Hello all,

I have a 1971 Lemans Sport Convertible and I want to replace my brakes. I have disk on the front and drum on the back. Is it worth doing disks in the back? If so recommendations please.

I'm a cruiser not a racer.

Thank you,

Tom G

I have the same car but with drums all the way around. I, as well, use it as a cruiser. No racing. I installed a good set of shoes and have stayed with the drums for now. Overall, I am satisfied with this set up as I do not normally get too crazy. If I were to move toward discs, I don't see a huge amount being gained for a cruiser with discs on the rear. You need to keep in mind, nearly 90% of your braking is coming from your front when considering weight and weight shift during braking. I would say you are fine, but you need to decide what you really want out of your car.

A kit costs about $425 plus labor. For cruising you probably could come up with other things to do with those funds.

I agree if your car is a driver with a mostly stock drive train I would not upgrade the rear brakes to disc's. Your car has front disc's and they do about 80% of the stopping in most brake situations.

Thank you all for your replies, I think I'm going to stay with the disks up front and the drums in the back. Why spend the money if I really don't need to and it brakes well.

Hope to see you all at a car show some day!

Regards,
