I took on the opportunity to change my distributor cap and rotor. I thought it would be good practice, plus I do not know when the last time it was changed and I got compulsive. Well I put everything back on correct, but I numbered the wires and the tape fell off in the process and I lost the order. I opened up the service manual and I put everything on correct according to the diagram and the car did not start, just a huge flame from the carb. I do not know where to start from here. My point left off from the spark plug wires starting at #1 on the driver side front most valve with 1,3,5,7 on the driver side, and 2,4,6,8 on the passenger. Any advice would be much appreciated. Firing order: 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2 counter clockwise( which i have no reference to what that means) I just followed the order of the photo in the manual to the order of the plugs and I still got no turnover.

Counter clockwise means the distributor turns counter clockwise. Did you do the firing order clockwise on the cap? (same way a clock moves?)

bump the engine over slowly until the line of the harmonic damper lines up with the zero on the timing tab on the timing chain cover. This will give you either #1 or #6 firing. Look at your distributor rotor if it's pointing at # 1 start wiith wire 1 and follow the sequence you have above. If pointing a #6 start with #6 and follow the sequence. I assume the book points out which terminal on the cap is #1 and #6
