I'm installing an HEI distributor in my 389. The original looked to be perfectly vertical on the engine, the HEI leans toward the driver's side. I don't want to proceed till I know that it is supposed to, please help with a reply.

No it's not supposed to lean.
Sounds like it did not drop all the way in.
