I have a 2004 Aztek. When the vehicle is running the door ajar light stays on. Checked all the doors and they are firmly shut. Is this a sensor or switch problem and if so how difficult/easy is it to troubleshoot.

Sounds like one of the door switches is not functioning. Does the interior light stay on also? Cannt tell you the difficulty since dont know your skill level, locate the switch, and check it with a meter.

I just went out to look and it is a door switch. This is my wife's vehicle. She told me yesterday the door ajar light stays on but I didn't investigate until just now. With the engine off, the key out and the doors shut the lights do stay on with the rotary light switch in the "door" position. She had it in the "off" position as the lights stay on while the car is running as well as off.

As far as skill level for autos go, it's pretty low. Electrical and electronics it's high but again not with autos. I was trying to locate the switch on the doors and could not find it. I can find it on my car and on my past cars but not this one. Is it located somewhere in the door latch or handle? To get at the switches do I have to take the inside door panel off? Are the switches normally closed or open when the door is closed?

Thanks for any info.

If the switch is not obviously on the door post or near the door hinges it is internal to the door. You can try looking at www.gmpartsdirect.com for a diagram indicating the location.
