I have a 2007 Torrent with a bad ECM. I bought a recycled on with the same part number. It did not work. I researched the issue and found two answers. First, it needs to be programmed to your VIN or VATS (Vehicle Anti Theft System) will lock you out. Second, if the part numbers match, it will work so the module must be bad. I can get it programmed for $110 but I will only get the purchase price back if it's bad. Does anyone know what to expect from an ECM pulled from a wreck? Should it work if part numbers match? What problems can I expect to encounter?

Thanks,

Tom

how do you know the original ecm was bad to start with?
the ecm has to programmed for your VIN
how can anybody tell you what to expect from a junk yard ECM, they have a low failure rate but anything is possible.

The original ecm had a short to ground on cylinder 6 injector which effectively kept it on. I measured it with power on and with the connectors off. I realize the risk of using junk yard parts. My question was looking for problems like lock out by the VATS system, crank timing, odometer mileage etc. Since I posted this I spoke to the service department at the local dealership. He said the car will think it's being stolen so will not allow it to be started. Reprogramming will fix it provided the ecm is in good condition.

Well, the ECM programmed correctly and the car runs great. I guess there isn't much to fear as long as you research. I was hoping for more help from this group though. Oh well.
