I have a 98 sunfire that I posted about recently that has completely shut down due to the theft system. Tried bypassing, had computer re-programmed/ flashed, all to no avail. I have the 2.2l engine in it. The engine has only 135000 miles. I have a freind who has a 2003 sunfire that the engine is knocking and he said he would sell it to me cheap. Will my engine work in the 2.2L Ecotech car as is, or can I swap the head head out, or will it just not work? Anyone out there know?

Wouldnt the cheapest thing to do is have your car looked at by a professional with the proper testing equipment? The Ecotec engine has no parts that are interchangeable with the over head valve 2.2. You would need to swap engine, wire harnesses, computer, etc.

Didn't they move the passlock into the cluster on the 98? I'd check that out if I were you...grab a cheap one from a junk yard and do a relearn...what can it hurt?

I took the car to the dealer. They reprogrammed the computer to the BCM and it still will not try the relearn process. I have already changed the Ignition switch and cylinder. The theft light will not flash. It stays on solid and even the dealer cannot get it to relearn. They were supposed to diagnose the car and have had it for 5 days now and have not touched it since they tried to reprogram it. I am at the point that I would rather pull the motor and trans and crush the car than to deal with this. It is becoming ridiculous.

Is this a GM dealer?

Have you considered calling GM customer service?

I just spoke with the service mgr again and he state he would make sure they get on it today, so I guess I will give it until the end of the day and see what they say.

Good luck and keep us posted, again as a last resort, call GM.

Will do. As an aside, thank you melsg5 for your imput regarding this car in this and other posts. I appreciate your input and suggestions.

Update

Just picked the car up from the dealership. There was a faulty wire in the harness. The repair bill was $278 for labor in tracking the wire and repairing it, but it is now running again. Thank you for the input I received here.

Glad you got the issue resolved.

Excellant, sometimes you just have to let the pros do the job.
