EGR valve over-heating.

I have a 94 Firebird with a 3.4 V6, and the EGR valve, (just replaced) is overheating and I notice black smudges around it. Is this normal or is there anything I need to check or replace? When the previous owner had the motor rebuilt, the mechanic wasn't paying attention when re-installing the motor and got the EGR valve up against the wiring harness. Well, it melted half the wires and fried the computer. I am replacing the computer and harness. I just need to know about the EGR valve issue.

The EGR valve is going to get pretty hot since there is exhaust gases passing through it.
