Electrical socket under drink holder?

I'm the proud owner of a '96 Sunfire. The worlds oddest car? It has had many owners before me. I do not have a manual. Is the socket under the cup holder for real? As in something you are supposed to plug into? Just found it. If so, who decided to put it there, and why? Also, let it be known, this car is a lot of things, but Lemon is not one of them!

it sounds like a socket for plugging in a GPS or any other device that requires an outlet

Thanks very much for the reply Admin. I would love to try it out, but..with everything that may have fallen in, couldn't that be dangerous? Did it come with this model? Seems like a very bad place for it.

Usually there is a plastic cover over it

It must have popped off or something, I'll be sure to find (or rig) a replacement. Just amazed at placement of it.
