engine differences?? also engine problems?/

Im looking @ buying a 1994 grand am - this car is exceptionally clean in & out! has a bad engine =due to oil pump failure. Im curious as to= what problems do these small 4 cyl engines have?? General consesus -what goes wrong with them?? This car has the HP engine -from 1995 uo they dont offer that engine ?? give me your experienc

Not sure which engine you are talking about 2.2 or 2.4? The 2.2 might have external head gasket leaks, the 2.4 might have oil leaks at the valve cover/head seal. Depending on mileage and maintenance record possible timing chain and tensioner replacement.

This car has the Hi-po 4 cyl engine - it is not offered in 1995 up cars. 180 HP dual OHC.Evidently oil pumps fail regularly? head gaskets were badly designed on earlier grand am 4 cyl engines. Most 4 cyl engines im finding are oil related destroyed/ Looking for others comments on the engs & trannys?? 5 speed & auto tranys. Has anyone done the v6 eng upgrade from the 4 cyl??

Thanx -i bought the car - exceptionally clan. engine oil pump failed & bottom siezed. Ill have @ home sunday. all i seem to find out is the oil pumps will fail & gm reccomends a 70,000 mile change. Also head gaskets (esp. earlier ones) fail allowing water in oil & causing oil pump failures. Best combination is later engines-96 up with that 94 HO head on them. any one have any engines with low mileage??
