If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "1995 Trans Am" isn't going to indicate to anybody that you need help. However, "Need help with my 1995 Trans Am" will. Be as descriptive as you can. Please use common sense... . The question I have and I’m sure the most common is, “How do I verify the engine # matches the car (1971 Pontiac Lemans Sport). I know the VIN codes on the dash. To the left of the water pump on the front of the block there is a number:
C? 231332 YP – I couldn’t find a YP for 1971 in your chart. I did see a YP for 68’ which corresponded to a 350-320 HP.
Was a YP made in 1971? Also should I be looking behind cylinder #8 for something else?

Once I determine the engine id how do I verify it against a identification number on the body?

My VIN # is: 237371g – 115033 –

Thanks. Poncho

From what I understand, the only way to get the

complete history on your vehicle is to go through PHS Historic Services This stands for Pontiac Historical Society. I also spoke with the people at Ame's performance and they told me that the numbers on the engine block would not match those in the serial number as they do with other manufacturers. The 23737 is the body style, the 1 following is the year, the G in your vin number should indicate in which plant the car was built. The 1 following the G indicates that it started out as a V-8, but does not indicate which V-8, and the rest of the numbers indicate yours was the 15033 car built. That is if your vin tag is supposed to be read the same way as my 69 Firbird conv. Hope this helps, Scott

Thanks Tackelberry for the information. I will check PHS website. If you hear of any codes or EIN that are on the block let me know. The 69 sounds nice.
