Hello,

I have a Pontiac engine from what I was told a 66 Tempest (but could be another year).

The code on the block is YF, there also is a nummer 428191 (production engine).

I also join the numbers below the intake near the distributor.

I read B.17. ? it looks like a 6 ?? What do you see ??
B= february
17= day
6= year

If I look to Oldride , a 66 YF engine is a 421ci
If I look to PontiacPower.net a 66 YF is only a B-body not a A-body !??
Is there a mistake somewhere ?

i dont understand your last statement, the links I provided show it is a 389, automatic transmission, 325HP, just as you are now stating, it is not a 421.

Year Engine HP Engine Trans CR Cam Head BBL Carb No.

Oldride obviously is a generic site, they cannt be masters of every old car ever made. Wallace Racing I trust because all they do is Pontiacs and have decades of experience with them. The internet can be quite confusing when researching the details.

I am having the same issue. I have searched around the web for quite a while with no luck. If anyone has resources other then the ones listed above please let me know. Thanks.

FYI - my engine block id is 517891 with a YF on bottom.

YF is either a 389 or a 400, what is the 17891 it's not a casting number. Find your casting number and then look here

correction on block casting code

Block code is 517891 with the YF below it. Sorry for the typo before.

I have searched quite a few websites and didn't see any codes that were even close to mine.

From what I have seen online the exhaust manifolds are definitely for 389's or 421's. And the YF during that year means its a 389.

But seeing as they didn't put a 389's in the 1966 2+2 Catalina; I would like to confirm its a 389 and not the 421 like it should be.
