Hi everyone! I'm new to this forum. We just recently "inherited" a 1994 Grand Am. It was given to us because the owner said there was a bad knocking sound in the engine area. It's a friend of mine - they decided to get a newer vehicle, and since they owed us some $ they gave us the car.
Anyway - they are correct. There is a knocking type sound coming from around the top of the engine. It isn't the lifters, I can hear those too. We found that the power steering reservoir was completely empty. I just put some fluid in there, and it doesn't seem as bad, but honestly it's hard to tell. Does anyone know what this might be? Oh, it has plenty of oil and good oil pressure. We are thinking about adding a heavier weight oil to see if that makes the sound go away. Also, if it helps, the knocking sound gets faster with acceleration.
Also, where is the ECU located in this car? I'm used to working on my Acura. I don't know anything about this car, but I'd like to learn. Does the ECU flash any codes or does it have to be hooked up to a diagnostic? We would love to get this car back on the road again if possible. It is in otherwise good condition. Hopefully it isn't anything major.
