Sounds like it is the valves. Being a 2008 I would defiantly take it to the dealership and have it checked out if it is still under warranty, This is not normal for a new car to be doing. Also be sure that you have enough oil in the car. If the oil is low the valves will knock every time.
Did you ever find out what the nocking was? I think I'm having the same problem. I took it to the dealer and they didn't do nothing about it. They only said that I needed to flush the engine when I change the oil. I don't want to deal with this dealer no more, but I can't take it to a gmc dealer because of the warranty contract.
I have a 2007 3.4 V6 and the ticking got pretty loud within 24K miles. Dealer said that it was covered under the 100K mile warranty. Nevertheless, I pressed and researched and discovered that there IS a service bulletin out on this issue and they fixed it. No more ticking. I think it was fairly major valve work
I think there was more than one service bulletin. I talked to two local dealers and they told me about them. Be sure we are talking about the same engine because there is more than one available. Mine is the "old tech" 3.4 V6 that they have made forever (except that NOW it is assembled in CHINA)
