Recently my wife noticed a weird smell coming from our 2003 Grand Am when driving home from the store. The temperature gauge was over 200, which was also weird to her since the store is like 10 mins away if that. She pulled into the driveway and smelled like something was burning. She then popped the hood and there was smoke coming out... our neighbor looked in the anti freeze compartment and there is oil in it. What might this mean? How much does it cost?

Oil and coolant are mixing. This usually happens both ways too BTW (Coolant in the oil and oil in the coolant.)

What is the antifreeze compartment? The overflow?

What kind of engine? Could be lower intake manifold gaskets going or a head gasket. $ will depend on your local mechanic or if you do it yourself.
